Health Science 411B: Exam 1 Review

The exams for Professor Matza's Health Science 411B (Health Science for Secondary Teachers) class will consist of objective and essay type questions. For exams 1 and 2 please provide Scantron 886E (100 questions and essay page attached). The Final Exam requires the standard Scantron 882. No essay questions will be on the final exam. These forms are available in the bookstore. Please remember to write each answer on the pages provided. Do not attach any pages, bluebooks, etc. You may write in essay format, or prepare a list, chart or table to explain your answers. Focus your preparation on the suggested material below:

 

  1. Clarify the difference between comprehensive and coordinated school health.
  2. Review the State Curriculum Standards for Health Education from CDE (3/08).
  3. Read SG Report 2004 on tobacco.

  5. Read the updated report on second hand smoke (2/04) under "Recent Data"

  6. Review the Mayo Clinic report on second hand smoke: Second Hand Smoke/Mayo Clinic.
  7. List the health content areas or subjects required by California law.
  8. List the recommendations of the Harvard School Health Project.
  9. Explain the California smoke free workplace law (Labor Code 6404.5).
  10. Review cultural implications of health mortality and morbidity with a focus on people of color.
  11. List major morbidities that occur in people of color.
  12. Apply knowledge of common health problems of youth and solve practical problems related to novel situations within the school setting.
  13. Identify numerous practical tips applicable to the secondary classroom setting.
  14. Discuss the difference between the Health Framework and the Health Education Standards.
  15. Describe the political implications of tobacco sales, and target marketing.
  16. Review body changes after quitting smoking in Chapter 5 (Matza), by the American Cancer Society.
  17. Discuss school, family and personal risk factors for drug abuse as described by Catalano et al.
  18. Discuss how effective communication and active listening can impact classroom discipline and learning.
  19. Define the Health Framework for California School K-12.
  20. Explain how skills to prevent drug use, STDs, etc., are related to the CA health standards.
  21. List major causes of death to adults and teens in America.
  22. Explain pre-service education for teacher candidates as it relates to adolescents.
  23. Discuss the medical problems associated with spit tobacco, pipes and cigars.
  24. List specific legislative efforts that can reduce tobacco use of teenagers.
  25. Discuss how poor diet and lack of exercise can be as devastating to the health of youth as active smoking. 
  26. Discuss determiners of health and list practical methods to increase longevity.
  27. Describe practical tips for parenting of adolescent children.
  28. Explain in loco parentis as a mandate for classroom teachers.
